Xuechang Leng, Artist

Xuechang Leng is an artist with a focus on exploring and utilising colour in his works created specifically for healthcare environments.

As an Artist-In-Residence at the ALLIANCE, Xuechang has collaborated closely with Person Centred Voices National Lead, Tommy Whitelaw, since 2020. From 2020 to 2022, Xuechang was granted an artist-in-residence project by the Scottish Graduate School for Arts and Humanities, which focused on supporting individuals with dementia and was hosted by the ALLIANCE. In 2022, Xuechang dedicated his efforts to a special colour mural at the Riverbank Resource Centre in Stirling. This initiative was designed to support individuals with learning disabilities and received backing from the ALLIANCE.

In addition to his role at the ALLIANCE, Xuechang also completed a practice-led research/colour installation project, conducted with his PhD supervisor at the Royal Edinburgh Hospital in 2019.

At our annual conference, Xuechang will be creating an art installation which will highlight the views and emotions of delegates towards the future of health and social care using colour.

Evolve dance group by Indepen-dance

Glasgow based Indepen-dance is an award winning inclusive dance company founded in 1996 by Karen Anderson MBE. The company works to enable disabled and non-disabled people to enjoy, express, and fulfill their potential through dance. Indepen-dance’s mission is to enable participation in high quality arts provision, improve wellbeing, quality of life and provide employment and opportunities for disabled and non-disabled dancers in the professional and non-professional dance sectors.

Indepen-dance’s Evolve group is for dancers who are keen to develop their skills in dance technique and performance through weekly classes. With Choreographer Katie Miller, the dancers were inspired by Glenn Miller’s music and created movements based on how this made everyone feel. They used tasks to make dances that felt expansive and joyful. At our conference, they will perform to Moonlight Serenade by Glenn Miller and God Put A Smile On Your Face by Mark Ronson and The Daptone Horns. Indepen-dance’s performing companies tour internationally and will present their International Inclusive Dance Festival, Gathered Together, from 4 to 7 September 2024 at Tramway.
