Changes in your body’s hormone levels before your period can cause physical and emotional changes. This is often known as Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS). There are many possible symptoms of PMS, but typical symptoms can include mood swings, feeling down, anxious or irritable, headaches, breast tenderness and tiredness. PMS doesn’t affect all people who have periods, but some people can experience very severe symptoms that can affect their everyday life. A more severe form of PMS is known as Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD). For more information see NHS Inform. You may also find this short information video helpful.
This session will provide a space for people to learn about why PMS happens, about common symptoms and how to manage them. It will provide people with practical advice on how to be aware of PMS in their own life, and how to talk about their experiences and self manage emotional symptoms.
We are pleased to be joined by expert speakers to cover the topic:
- Dr Ellie Golightly, NHS Lothian
- Gillian Meens, Project Manager, Mental Health Foundation
The session will feature short presentations, and a Q&A.
Please note that panellists can’t give any individual medical advice, but if you wish to put a question to Dr Golightly on PMS then please email us by 6th December at whp@alliance-scotland.org.uk We may not be able to include all questions on the day.
This session is for anyone that wishes to learn more about PMS, including those that have experience it and those that do not. Health professionals are also welcome to join, although discussion will not focus on diagnosis or managing the condition from a professional perspective.
