- Location: Online

Social Security Scotland financial support for students balancing their studies with caring for a family member, friend or neighbour.
The event may be of interest if you are a student in Scotland and are also caring for a family member, friend or neighbour. The type of support you may be providing can include emotional, mental or physical support.
Purpose of this event:
Many student carers are not aware that they may be eligible for extra money.
Social Security Scotland wants to raise awareness of the financial support available to student carers across Scotland and ensure they receive the support they are entitled to.
The free event will share more details around Carer Support Payment, a payment of £83.30 a week, which replaces Carer’s Allowance in Scotland.
Carers in education who may be eligible includes:
- Part time students – those who spend less than 21 hours a week in class or doing coursework for any course
- Students aged 20 and over and who study full time for any course
- Students aged 16-19, who study full time in advanced education at university or for a college course such as a Higher National Certificate and Higher National Diploma
- There are also some circumstances where students aged 16-19 studying over 21 hours a week in non-advanced education, such as studying for National Certificates and Scottish Highers, may also be eligible if they meet certain criteria.
- The event will also touch on Young Carer Grant, an annual payment of £390.25 for eligible young carers aged 16, 17, 18 or 19 year olds.
This informative session will include the following information:
- Overview of Carer Support Payment
- Carer’s Allowance Supplement changes
- Introduction of Carer Additional Person Payment
- How Carer Support Payment and Young Carer Grant interact
- Ways to apply and help available
- You will have the opportunity to ask questions you may have from the people who have designed these benefits, including policy colleagues in the Scottish Government.
