The Health and Social Care Academy in partnership with RSA Scotland are revisiting Beveridge's Giants.
Join the Health and Social Care Alliance Scotland (the ALLIANCE) and the RSA Scotland for the fourth event as part of the RSA Scotland Health Network series exploring Britain’s new ‘Giants’. The focus for this next event will be on homelessness.
Homelessness continues to be a significant problem in Scotland. It is estimated that at least 8% of the population has experienced homelessness at some point in their lives, with poverty identified as the main driver. Homelessness has a key relationship to health. Research conducted by the Scottish Government shows that people experiencing homelessness are more likely to use health services.
Radical action is required to tackle homelessness. The Housing First model has been recognised as one way of addressing homelessness. Housing First has been implemented internationally across the United States, Canada and Europe. Housing First combines settled housing with person centred support. The Scottish Government’s 2020-2021 programme committed to build on the success of the Housing First pathfinder and scale up Housing First more rapidly.
This session will provide a space to consider what is required to realise transformational change in homelessness services. It will provide an opportunity to hear more about the Housing First model as well as wider responses to ending homelessness. We will hear from both international and national perspectives and will consider how homelessness is being tackled from a city perspective.
Consideration will be given to the transformations required within the housing system to prevent and support the eradication of homelessness. Throughout the session emphasis will be placed on ensuring the voice of lived experience is at the centre of any discussion and action to end homelessness.
Facilitated by the RSA Scotland and the ALLIANCE, there will be plenty of opportunities to discuss the levers for change and the steps that can be taken to eradicate homelessness.
The session will be chaired by Jamie Cooke, Head of RSA Scotland. We are delighted to welcome the following speakers:
- Michelle Hoon, HAND Project and Policy Manager, Salt Lake City
- Finnish Cultural Institute TBC
- Mark Kelvin, Director, Glasgow Alliance to End Homelessness
- Martin Boyle, Glasgow Alliance to End Homelessness
