Find out how the Dementia Carer Voices team plans to commemorate this milestone in the ‘You Can Make a Difference’ campaign

We are delighted to announce that we have received our 20,000th pledge to make a difference! Our UK Project Lead Tommy Whitelaw has now visited 750 hospitals, care homes, universities and colleges, engaging with 150,000 people in the process.

It is the individual stories that matter, however. And you can read each of the 20,000 pledges we have received on the Pledges section of our website. It is inspiring to think that so many people have stopped and reflected on what they can do to make a difference for people living with dementia.

These pledges encompass practical improvements in the workplace, as well as more personal reflections. You can read about how some of these 20,000 pledges have been turned into meaningful actions on the Case Study section of our website.

It is fitting that our 20,000th pledge has come during World Alzheimer’s Month, which we will be marking with a mini-tour of Scotland. This will begin with a trip to the University of the West of Scotland’s Ayr campus where our Director Irene Oldfather and UK Project Lead Tommy Whitelaw will speak with student nurses about the difference they can make for people living with dementia.

Tommy will then continue the mini-tour visiting the locations below. We hope you can take part!

  • Friday 14 September: The University of the West of Scotland (Ayr Campus)
  • Monday 17 September: NHS Lanarkshire General Practice Nurse Roadshow
  • Tuesday 18 September (AM): New College Lanarkshire
  • Tuesday 18 September (PM): NHS Education for Scotland (Edinburgh)
  • Wednesday 19 September: NHS Tayside General Practice Nurse Roadshow
  • Thursday 20 September: West Lothian College

Our UK Project Lead Tommy Whitelaw has posted an opinion piece about this incredible landmark here on the Dementia Carer Voices website.

Commenting on our 20,000th pledge to make a difference, he told us that:

“The last four years have been the most amazing experience. I have been able to share my own personal story across this campaign. However, together, we have also been given the opportunity to share the stories of so many remarkable people who have written to us, and so many remarkable people we have met along the way.

“Although we’re based in Scotland we’ve had pledges from right across the UK – from England, Wales, Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland and Jersey.”

ALLIANCE Director Irene Oldfather added that:

“To have reached 20,000 pledges is an incredible landmark for our ‘You Can Make a Difference’ campaign. The Dementia Carer Voices project really speaks to the hearts of people working within the health and social care sector, and often reminds them of why they decided to devote their lives to caring for others in the first place.

“Our talks are an ideal opportunity for health and social care staff to pause and reflect on what is really important to the people in their care. As our case studies show, a small pledge can make a huge difference.”
