Read the report by the Health and Social Care Alliance Scotland looking at why people in Scotland are disengaging with Long Covid services.
The Health and Social Care Alliance Scotland (the ALLIANCE) have recently published their report “Accessing Long Covid services in Scotland: to be believed, listened to and supported”. The ALLIANCE engaged with people living with, or caring for someone living with, Long Covid to discover why people in Scotland are disengaging from Long Covid services. Two online focus groups and an online survey were conducted, engaging with a total of 210 people. The report highlights the trends and experiences of people affected by Long Covid, how they access services and, if it is the case, why they have disengaged from services. This engagement was carried out on behalf of NHS National Services Scotland to assist with design and development of Long Covid service delivery across Scotland.
The symptoms of Long Covid are often severe and unpredictable and a large number of people who engaged with us have experienced symptoms for a number of years. The positive experiences were largely centered around relationships with healthcare professionals, for example GPs but the overall experience of accessing care has been negative, with a number of respondents saying that they felt there are no Long Covid specific services to disengage from. They are hoping that this will change and a more robust, wrap around, holistic Long Covid service will be available in the future.
