The ALLIANCE has backed calls to broaden the definition of caring support in the rules for Scotland's new young carers entitlement.
The new Young Carers Grant is expected to be available to young carers aged between 16 and 18 from Autumn 2019. It will consist of a £300 one-off payment, which can be applied for annually.
The Young Carers Grant (this link will take you away from our website) aims to provide some financial support during a key transition period in young carers’ lives to help improve their health and education outcomes as they move into the adult world. It will be delivered by the Social Security Scotland.
Responding to a Scottish Government consultation on its regulations, the ALLIANCE has called for a broadening of the eligibility criteria, recognising that many young carers will provide emotional support, not just physical tasks.
We have also reiterated the points made by participants at a recent ALLIANCE consultation event which unanimously supported proposals to ensure young carers should be able to combine their hours caring for more than one person to meet the required 16 hours average requirement.
