Carers Voices to launch Conversation Café in 2021

Join the Carer Voices team at the first monthly Carers Conversation Café in January 2021 for conversations that matter.

No one should have to care alone. According to research by the national carers’ charity Carers UK (this link will take you away from our website), eight in ten unpaid carers have felt lonely or isolated because of their caring role. The Carer Voices project aims to allow carers to start, join in and be part of the conversation.

In January 2021, the Carer Voices project will mark the 10th Anniversary of National Lead Tommy Whitelaw’s walk across Scotland’s towns and cities where he met and collected carer stories and experiences by launching a virtual walk across Scotland. At a time that social distancing measures remain in place due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the project aims to now bring together carers virtually through a monthly Carers Conversation.

This conversation café will run on a drop-in basis, bringing together carers interested in sharing their feelings, thoughts and ideas over a tea and coffee and in a relaxed and informal space.

The first online carer conversation café will run on the last Tuesday of January 2021 from 11am-12pm on Zoom. Each monthly meeting will foster peer support and be organised around different themes, featuring different guests and activities including singalongs and poetry readings. The date, time and agenda for each month will be determined by the group’s needs and preferences.

Director of Strategy and Engagement, Irene Oldfather said:

“So looking forward to our Conversation Cafés where people from across Scotland can join for a chat, share their favourite poem or book, or find out more about things of interest to them with our monthly special topic. Caring for someone can be a rollercoaster of emotions with highs and lows but above all it is something all who care do out of love. Having the opportunity to share that experience with others and to know that you’re not alone is so important in these difficult times. I’m really looking forward to our first Café in January.”

National Lead, Tommy Whitelaw shared:

“Carers, caring and people are at the heart of all we do in the Carer Voices team. We hope you will join us each month for conversations and listening to create a platform to highlight what matters to carers across Scotland. We are very much looking forward to meeting you.”
