The ALLIANCE has submitted a response to the Scottish Government consultation on market restrictions for single-use plastic items.

The Scottish Government published a public consultation on tackling the negative impact that plastic waste has on our communities, oceans, rivers and land ecosystems (this link will take you away from our website).

Climate change is an area in which radical change, and urgent and decisive action is needed to tackle plastic pollution and protect our environment. The consultation proposes market restrictions on a range of single-use plastic items, including single-use plastic cutlery, plates, straws, beverage stirrers and balloon sticks.

The ALLIANCE welcomes the move towards a more sustainable and circular economy. However, our consultation response calls for the needs and rights of disabled people and people with long term conditions to be fully considered prior to implementation of market restrictions. This is particularly important in relation to single-use plastic straws which are an integral part of daily life for many people. We therefore recommend an equalities and human rights based approach, which ensures transparent, fair and consistent outcomes for individuals accessing the support to which they are entitled.
