Briefing notes on a stage 3 Social Security Bill amendment backed by more than 40 organisations has been published today.
The amendment, being raised with MSPs in the name of the Scottish Independent Advocacy Alliance (SIAA), is supported by the ALLIANCE, Advocard, Disability Agenda Scotland (DAS) and the Scottish Council for Voluntary Organisations (SCVO) among others.
As detailed in the new briefing note, it proposes a new Section 8A of the Social Security (Scotland) Bill to help ensure the practical and affordable provision of independent advocacy services for anyone requiring assistance under the new Act who wants it. A shorter version of the briefing note is also available.
The ALLIANCE believes that the Social Security (Scotland) Bill must be strengthened by the inclusion of provisions recognising the universal right to independent advocacy and providing access to independent advocacy services and is vital if the Social Security (Scotland) Bill is to fully recognise the right to social security – as indicated in the Principles at Section 1 – and improve outcomes for everyone who requires assistance under the legislation.
Organisations wishing to add their support to this amendment are asked to contact Andrew Strong, Assistant Director (Policy and Communications), the ALLIANCE by email at: firstname.lastname@example.org.
Stage 3 of the Social Security Bill’s progress through the Scottish Parliament is expected to occur shortly after the Parliament’s Easter recess (31 March to 15 April 2018).
