"Shielders are still two or three steps behind and we just seem to be be very much the forgotten people".

In this ALLIANCE Live podcast, Events and Communications Manager Justine Duncan speaks to Audrey Birt and Kirsty Gibson, who are both currently shielding.  Listen to find out more about their experiences of shielding,  the impact it has had on their family and friends and how they think their experiences could be improved.

Kirsty lives with multiple long term conditions and shares the impact shielding has made to her life and having to rely on her family for shopping and collecting medication.  She celebrated her 30th birthday alone, but has been keeping busy doing TikToks, on social media with friends and rediscovering hobbies.  More information for those shielding in the daily briefings would make a difference.

Audrey took the decision herself to shield and speaks from her experience of living with a disability and the challenges of not being on the shielding list. She recently wrote a blog (this link will take you away from our website) about her life currently being ‘greyed out’ and this feels very accurate.  Audrey has been keeping busy on knitting, doing some coaching and staying connected with family and friends. She is clear that in planning for the future, those who have been shielding  must be involved to shape the next phase.
