Getting to know yourself better, taking control and having choice

In the lead up to Self Management Week, we shared interviews with previous Self Management Awards winners, people who attended the awards ceremony and others who got involved last year.

Describe yourself in three words: Caring, organised and determined

What would your ideal day look like?: Waking up in a tent with my family in Glencoe on a sunny day and spending the day exploring in the mountains with tea in the Clachaig Inn at night.

How did it feel to win Self Management Project of the Year in 2015?
We felt delighted to win Self Management Project of the Year. I felt really happy for MAPS staff, peer volunteers and people who attended MAPS groups.

What, if anything, has changed in your organisation since you won the award?

Winning the award raised the profile of the MAPS service. We were able to secure an external evaluation from NHS Lothian which was amazing! We sadly lost funding but hope to be able to relaunch the service with new funding in the near future.

What helps you to self manage? 
I use WRAP (This link will take you away from our website) to help me self manage. It enables me to really connect with how I am feeling and to maintain my wellness through using tools in my wellness toolbox. Strong family connections also help me self manage.

How has your understanding self management helped you in your life or the work that you do?
Being able to empathise with people I work with is vital in my work, and in my life. Sharing my experiences and how I self manage helps those around me. In turn, hearing others’ experiences and how they self manage helps me.

What are the key benefits to self managing? 
To me, the benefits of self managing are around getting to know yourself better, taking control and having choice and support in your life.

What is your top self management tip?
To encourage people to self manage, I would encourage others to spend time with someone who does self manage- be inspired!

What advice would you give those applying for the awards in 2016?
I would say, give it a go! It’s worth taking a bit of time within a busy day to apply.

If you could sum up the 2015 awards ceremony in one word, what would it be?
Inspiring!
