I grew up in the care system until I was 15 years old. I didn\u2019t really know what I wanted to do and never thought I would have a meaningful career. I left school with very little to show for my academic journey but my mother was a nurse and she always had an empathetic nature that I really aspired to. My partner is also a nurse and has been an amazing supporter. She was the person who suggested the Access course \u2013 it provides a path to learn the necessary skills to get into Adult or Mental Health Nursing courses. The support of my partner and family is the reason I am here today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I am in my final year as an adult nursing student. I hope to go into the palliative care sector when I qualify but for now my role is to assist with the personal care of our patients and to learn as much as I can from my wonderful colleagues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Someone once asked me how I deal with people passing away and I told them that I feel that I am in a privileged position; I can reassure their family that their loved one is cared for with respect and dignity and that they can rely on me and the team around me. This reflection was a defining moment in my career thus far and constantly inspires me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I would encourage anyone who is interested in nursing to go for it, because they are already on their way to becoming a phenomenal nurse. It is not an occupation, but a vocation and a sincere way to help someone when they may not be able to help themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Every day has a challenge or an obstacle to overcome but I believe that what happens to you in life does not write your story, it’s how you respond that defines your legacy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
