This may involve managing a heavy caseload with competing priorities such as acute wound care, end-of-life support, and complex long term conditions, while triaging referrals, reallocating work, and providing clinical advice in response to changing pressures.

One of the most rewarding examples is preventing a hospital admission for a frail patient through timely assessment, medication management, liaison with the GP and multidisciplinary team, while supporting their family members. Equally important is supporting the team by maintaining open communication, checking in with staff, recognising good practice, and helping less experienced nurses manage pressure. A good day doesn’t necessarily end with everything completed exactly as planned, but it does end with patients being safe, families feeling heard, and the team feeling supported. Despite the intensity of working in a busy area, these days reinforce the vital role of District Nursing and strong clinical leadership in the community.

Having the opportunity to deliver and lead high quality, safe and person centred care and make a difference to individuals, families and communities is what keeps me motivated. Working within the community allows me to see the direct impact of nursing interventions on individual’s independence, wellbeing, and quality of life.

Leadership and workforce development also play a significant role in my motivation. Supporting, developing, and empowering Nurses and healthcare support workers is essential. By fostering a positive learning culture, encouraging professional development, and promoting wellbeing, I aim to ensure staff feel valued, confident, and capable of delivering compassionate and safe care in increasingly complex situations.

Advocacy is another key driver for me — both for the individuals and families we care for, and for District Nursing as a profession. District Nursing is a vital component of integrated health and social care, supporting prevention, reducing hospital admissions, and enabling people to remain at home with dignity.

To anyone considering Nursing or Midwifery as a career, I would say that it is a profession grounded in compassion, professionalism, and lifelong learning. It offers the opportunity to develop clinical expertise, leadership skills, and the ability to influence care at both an individual and system level. In District Nursing in particular, you will practice holistically, develop strong therapeutic relationships, and play a critical role in shaping care that is person centred and community focused.

Read all Humans of Scotland stories here.

In connection with Humans of Scotland, the ALLIANCE Person Centred Voices team launched a short film. In it, we hear from some of the incredible nurses and midwives we’ve had the honour of meeting over the years. This film is a celebration of person centred care, professional pride, and the human connections that sit at the heart of nursing and midwifery.
