Report launch: ‘The Opportunity is now’ – Digital Gathering 2023 report
Session summary from day two of our Annual Digital Gathering 2023.
On Thursday 23 February 2023 the ALLIANCE’s policy team hosted an online launch event to mark the publication of a commissioned research report, ‘The opportunity is now’. The research looks at where we’ve been in relation to human rights, and the journey ahead. The event was attended by 41 people , including rights holders and third sector health and social care organisations.
Presentations
The event was chaired by Rob Gowans, Policy and Public Affairs Manager at the ALLIANCE.
Gillian McElroy, Senior Policy Officer at the ALLIANCE, outlined why the ALLIANCE commissioned the research and what the key aims of the project were. The Scottish Government has made commitments to embed human rights throughout Scots law and across our policy landscape. However, if human rights are to be meaningfully implemented in practice, it is important to analyse where existing practice in health and social care does, and does not, align with human rights based principles. The report is intended to contribute to that evidence base.
Barry Black and Dr Jo Ferrie, Branch Social Research, presented on the key findings of the research report and its recommendations. The report explored four case study areas:
- What next for human rights policy and health and social care in Scotland?
- Learning from the pandemic experience
- Human rights in healthcare education
- Reflections and aspirations for Scotland’s National Action Plan for Human Rights (SNAP)
The presentation included a screening of a short video based on the third case study within the report, looking at an online resource co-produced with nursing students to develop a better understanding of human rights based approaches within nursing practice.
The presentation was followed by a question and answer session with participants and an interactive session exploring some of the research themes in further detail.
