The Scottish Government's approach to Long Covid will centre on four key elements, including supported self management.
A paper has been published by the Scottish Government, laying out their approach to supporting people living with Long Covid (this link will take you away from our website). Long Covid has affected many people beyond their initial period of illness from the virus, with symptoms including fatigue, pain, breathlessness, and cognitive impairment.
The Scottish Government approach is centred on four key elements:
- Supported self management
- Primary care and community-based support
- Rehabilitation support
- Secondary care investigation and support
The commitment to supported self management includes availability of information from NHS24 and NHS Inform, development of community-based resources in partnership with the third sector, and awareness raising for Chest, Heart and Stroke Scotland’s Long Covid support service.
Commenting on the publication of the paper ALLIANCE Chief Executive, Professor Ian Welsh OBE, stated:
“People living with Long Covid have faced extremely challenging physically, mentally and emotionally experiences. The ALLIANCE welcomes the publication of the approach paper as an important step towards improvements to Long Covid care and support. In particular, commitments to supported self management are vital to support people to live their lives better, on their terms.”
