Minister lays out health and social care spend in 2022-23 Scottish Budget

According to the government, the budget invests £1.6 billion in social care and integration ahead of the planned National Care Service.

Following last week’s publication of the draft 2022-23 Scottish Budget, Cabinet Secretary for Health and Social Care Humza Yousaf has written to the Health, Social Care and Sport Committee. In his letter (this link will take you away from our website) he lays out how the Scottish Government’s planned expenditure aligns with the Committee’s recommendations.

According to the Scottish Government, the budget for 2022-23 (this link will take you away from our website) includes record expenditure of £18 billion for health and social care, with £1.6 billion of that specifically for social care and integration. This is part of the government’s stated intention to increase social care spend by 25% by the end of this parliament in 2026.

The Cabinet Secretary’s letter provides further detail on some of this expenditure as it relates to the Committee’s recommendations, including on preventative spend, progress on integration, and spending on community-based services.
