New insights into barriers to digital inclusion published

Discover Digital launches summary insights from small grants funded projects.
‘Discover Digital’ is a project to raise awareness of digital tools which promote health and wellbeing. It has been running since 2018 with support from the Scottish Government. Our vision is a future where anyone living in Scotland can find and access care and support at the right time, in the right way. Some of this care would be delivered through in-person services, some would be built on self management practices and some would be digital.
Over 2021, Discover Digital funded seven projects to engage seldom heard communities to find out about their experiences with digital health and care. We wanted to find out what barriers they were facing, as well as what supports could be put in place to overcome these barriers.
There have been recurrent themes surfacing from the engagement. For example, issues around connectivity, skills and confidence seem to be near universal, regardless of the group being considered. There are also new challenges emerging from the use of digital, linked to accessibility of services and power dynamics. More detail around these themes, as well as some recommendations on how to tackle the barriers, can be found in our Discover Digital summary report.
Enabling seven organisations to carry out their independent research and activities resulted in a variety of rich and valuable insights. Taken together, these insights show the scale of the challenge that we have ahead of us in ensuring that we create a future where truly no one is left behind. But they also highlight the positives we can learn from, the energy and supports inherent in communities, and the strengths that we can build on.
