Discover how ‘What Matters to You?’ is transforming lives at Napier House by promoting kindness, compassion, and active listening.

Discover the inspiring story of how ‘What Matters to You?’ (WTMY) is transforming lives at Napier House, in partnership with Fife Health and Social Care Partnership (HSCP) and Health and Social Care Alliance Scotland (The ALLIANCE).

Over the past year, Tommy Whitelaw, ALLIANCE’s Person Centred Voices National Lead, delivered workshops and engaged with staff, residents, and families around WTMY principles such as intelligent kindness, active listening, and compassion.

These workshops support the development of a workplace culture where kindness and compassion shape every interaction, creating a great place to live and work.

In the short film, Diane Roth, OD and Culture Specialist at Fife HSCP, reflects on how this journey began and its incredible impact. Staff share how the WTMY approach has benefited relationships, and the care provided, while a family member highlights the importance of asking people, like her father, what truly matters to them.

Diane Roth, OD and Culture Specialist, Fife HSCP said: “When we first invited Tommy Whitelaw from The Alliance to come and speak at Fife Health and Social Care Partnership’s leadership session in May 2023, we had no idea that this would start what has been an amazing journey together.  Staff, carers and families of those we support have taken inspiration from the presentations and workshops across Fife, and we are seeing the difference that can be made simply by asking ‘what matters to you?”

Reflecting on the initiative’s success, Irene Oldfather, Director of Strategic Partnerships, External Affairs and Outreach at The ALLIANCE, said: “Our Person Centred Voices film demonstrates the importance of placing staff and residents at the heart of all we do. It’s difficult to overestimate how important it is to hear the voices of those who often feel undervalued in the system – both staff and residents – and to put them at the front of all that we do. Thanks so much to Tommy Whitelaw and the team at Fife HSCP for listening and acting and bringing about that innovation and action that starts with asking and listening to what people want. Resources are important but putting people, their lives, hopes and expectations at the heart of care is key in ensuring quality services that deliver for people. Well done Tommy and the team!”
