Caitlin’s story
“Nursing offers the chance to make a real difference in people’s lives.”
As a Gynaecology nurse, I provide specialised and compassionate care to women with general gynaecological conditions and cancers, supporting them through treatments and coordinating safe and holistic care.
I have always been driven by a desire to care for others and make a meaningful difference during some of the most vulnerable moments of people’s lives. This commitment inspires me to provide compassionate, holistic support that helps patients feel valued, understood, and empowered throughout their journey.
A good day at work is one where I can deliver safe and person centred care that meets the individual needs of each patient. It’s about collaborating effectively with my team to ensure treatments are holistic and well coordinated. Seeing patients leave feeling more supported, informed, and comfortable than when they first arrived is incredibly rewarding, as it reflects the positive impact of our combined efforts and the trust we’ve built throughout their journey.
A moment in my career that stands out and that I am really proud of involves one particular patient: she had a particularly complex cancer diagnosis but I supported her through her treatment, comforted her and advocated for her needs along the way, coordinated her care and I saw her regain confidence following an incredibly difficult time.
The support and encouragement I get from the team I work with is vital. They inspire me through their professionalism, knowledge and commitment to providing high quality care to our patients. I am motivated by the difference we can make in a patient’s life.
I would tell someone considering nursing as a career that it is an incredibly challenging but rewarding career. It allows you to develop lifelong skills and work as part of a supportive team. Nursing offers the chance to make a real difference in people’s lives.

In connection with Humans of Scotland, the ALLIANCE Person Centred Voices team launched a short film. In it, we hear from some of the incredible nurses and midwives we’ve had the honour of meeting over the years. This film is a celebration of person centred care, professional pride, and the human connections that sit at the heart of nursing and midwifery. You can watch the film here.
