As part of our staff introductions series we hear from Digital Health and Care User Researcher Giulia.
In 140 characters, what is your role at the ALLIANCE?
I work in the Digital Health and Care team and I do user research to better understand the needs of the people we work with.
What is your previous experience?
I came to Scotland in 2011 to study Neuroscience at University. After completing my Masters by Research I realised that I didn’t want to be in the lab – I wanted to work with people, so I started a job in a research support role at the Anne Rowling Regenerative Neurology Clinic in Edinburgh. At the same time my friend, Pooja, had an idea that we developed into a company (CogniHealth). Initially, I worked for CogniHealth part-time until we had the funding for me to join full-time – we developed an app for carers of people with dementia.
Biggest learning experience in previous or current role?
Communication is the most important thing when it comes to working together effectively. It’s not just about what you say, but how you say it. In order for a team to work together people need to understand each other.
Twitter, Facebook or Instagram?
Definitely Facebook. My 16-year old sister says that Facebook is for old people. But I love it. I have Instagram and I like the filters but I mostly use it to follow accounts that post cute dog pictures. I recently joined Twitter for work and I’m still getting used to it!
In my spare time I like to…
I love to read. I used to read all the time but then work got in the way. I also love to travel and see new places. Luckily my partner shares that passion and we get to go on amazing trips together.
When you were younger what did you want to be when you grew up?
When I was 5 I wanted to be an opera singer or a ballerina. My dreams were crushed when my mum explained to me that I couldn’t sing. In hindsight, I am really glad she did because that is definitely true!
Trade places with someone for one day, who would it be?
Hermione Granger. I love Harry Potter and I always wanted to visit Hogwarts (I do know it’s not real though!)
Planes, trains or automobiles?
Trains. I like that you can walk around and work on them. They also don’t make me motion sick and they are lot more environmentally friendly than planes.
Stay tuned for more staff (re)introductions in the coming weeks.
