It Takes a Village: Expanding the Reach of Child Mental Health Services Through Community Involvement and Clinical Staging

It Takes a Village is an ambitious new research programme led by University of Glasgow (UofG) that aims to transform how children and young people access mental health support. Co-designed with young people who have lived experience of mental health difficulties, the study will explore whether trusted members of local communities, trained and supervised by mental health professionals, can help identify, assess and support young people experiencing common mental health problems.

The programme will develop and test a UK task-sharing model that combines community-based support with a novel clinical staging approach, enabling earlier identification and intervention for anxiety, depression and behavioural difficulties among 11 to 18-year-olds. Working across schools, communities and health services in England and Scotland, the study aims to improve access to timely support for young people who might otherwise struggle to receive help.
