GMC Scotland have published a new report which analyses trends in the medical workforce across the UK.

Published by GMC Scotland, The state of medical education and practice in the UK: workforce report analyses trends in the medical workforce across the UK. It uses a variety of sources to provide insights for policymakers and workforce planners – as well as deeper analysis on specific themes.

The workforce report includes:

  • Chapter 1: Overview of the workforce. Highlighting the overall numbers of doctors on the register as well as data by broad area of practice. This includes a focus on Specialty and Associated Specialist doctors (SAS) and Locally Employed doctors (LE).
  • Chapter 2: Doctors joining the UK workforce. Analysing the UK university medical student intake and observing patterns and trends in doctors joining the UK workforce.
  • Chapter 3: The UK postgraduate training pipeline. An overview of the numbers of doctors in specific postgraduate training roles. Analysing upcoming concerns around clinical and education supervision and the increasing pressure on trainers.
  • Chapter 4: Doctors leaving the workforce. Highlighting the numbers of doctors leaving the UK medical workforce. This includes leaving rates by broad area of medicine.
  • Chapter 5: The future workforce. Analysing three potential future scenarios built on trends and patterns from 2017-2023 data. Highlighting the possible implications of recent and planned changes to the number of UK medical school places, in the context of overall trends. Also includes a snapshot of trends about the future GP workforce.
  • Chapter 6: Conclusions and key insights for workforce planning. An overview of the changing nature of the UK medical workforce. Includes a summary of necessary changes.
