I have an invisible disability

Section: The ALLIANCEType: Case Study

The ALLIANCE Humans of Scotland, shares and showcases short stories about the everyday lives of the people we engage with.

“I have an invisible disability. The trouble is that on good day I look fine but the next day I could be in my wheelchair. For this reason I get judged a lot and have to tell people that I am not a benefit cheat. I feel I am always leaving the house having to be prepared to prove my illness is real to strangers.

Using the blue badge is one of the most important things as it allows me to get out and try to be normal by joining my friends to go shopping. However, the looks and questions I get when people see I am parked in a disabled spot and look normal, it can ruin my day and make me feel so bad for using something that I need.

I have put on a limp before just so I don’t get asked 500 questions about where I am parked.”
