The ALLIANCE welcome the proposal for a Disability Commissioner, with the widest possible powers of investigation.

Jeremy Balfour MSP consulted on a proposal for a member’s bill which would create a Disability Commissioner for Scotland (this link will take you away from our website). The proposed Disability Commissioner would act as a champion for disabled people, similar to the role played by the Children and Young People’s Commissioner for children and young people, and would be accountable to the Scottish Parliament.

The ALLIANCE response:

  • Welcomes the proposal;
  • Encourages consideration of how the proposed Disability Commissioner would interact with a possible Autism and Learning Disability Commissioner;
  • Calls for the broadest possible powers to investigate both Scottish public bodies and service providers;
  • Suggests that the Disability Commissioner’s office have a specific duty to involve disabled people in their work by providing appropriate resource to enable to them to do so, including via comprehensive inclusive communication.
