Report mapping the supports and services in place across Scotland during pregnancy and into the first few months of a baby’s life.

The Scottish Government commissioned CELCIS, the Centre for Excellence for Children’s Care and Protection, to map the supports and services in place across Scotland during pregnancy and into the first few months of a baby’s life.
The aim of the study was to develop an increased understanding of the universal, additional and targeted support offered and how this support was delivered, and to gather workforce views on what works well and the challenges experienced locally.

This report sets out the study findings alongside recommendations for policy and practice. The study identifies several key conditions for strengthening early help and support for babies and families. Central to these is a sustained commitment to prioritising support during pregnancy and the post-birth period, recognising the critical importance of the earliest years of life. Insights gathered also highlight the value of building on existing strengths within the GIRFEC approach to create a more coherent and consistent framework for supporting infants and families. Together, these foundations can support the development of a comprehensive early help offer, ensuring that families are able to access appropriate support across universal, additional and targeted services.
