Treatment will be available from private surgeons in Bristol and the US state of Missouri, with costs covered by the Scottish Government.

The Scottish Government have confirmed that contracts to carry out mesh removal surgery have been awarded to two private surgeons outside Scotland (this link will take you away from our website). Patients who would prefer to be treated outside of the NHS will be able to receive treatment from Spire Health Care in Bristol, or the Mercy Hospital in the US state of Missouri, where Dr Dionysios Veronikis performs surgery.

The cost of private surgery will be reimbursed under the proposed Transvaginal Mesh Removal (Cost Reimbursement) (Scotland) Bill. This includes both the cost of the surgery and travel to and from the clinic.

In announcing these contracts the Cabinet Secretary for Health and Social Care, Humza Yousaf, stated:

“We recognise the pain and suffering of women who have been impacted by complications as a result of transvaginal mesh implants. That is why we are absolutely determined to ensure those with mesh complications get the treatment that they want and need.”
