The ALLIANCE welcomes updates to the GIRFEC Assessment of Wellbeing, with recommendations on implementation and links to the UNCRC.
The GIRFEC guidance refresh Public Consultation on the Assessment of Wellbeing launched on 1st November 2021. Over the years, the ALLIANCE has heard from a significant number of people and organisations across Scotland with direct experience of implementing GIRFEC, and of providing and accessing children’s services. Our consultation response draws on this evidence base, as well as the views gathered from our members throughout the consultation period, and during a members event held on 2nd December 2021.
The ALLIANCE and its members welcome the updates to the GIRFEC Statutory Guidance on the Assessment of Wellbeing. The refreshed document is clear enough for practitioners to use; members felt that it reads well, with clear links to other children’s policies.
Echoing some of the recommendations also laid out in our response to the GIRFEC guidance refresh Stakeholder Focused consultation, the ALLIANCE suggests that practical examples, tools, and methodologies outlining how the guidance can be implemented should be included in this Statutory Guidance. We also urge Scottish Government to provide further clarity on how to implement the principles outlined in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC), with calls from our members for the refreshed guidance to include practical examples on how to do this, and how to address UNCRC implementation with children and families.
