Have you been affected by cancer? The ALLIANCE has now opened recruitment of the Cancer Care Peer Evaluators to the general public.
Would you like to influence how cancer services are delivered in Scotland? Then this is the position for you.
Apply now to become a Peer Evaluator for the Transforming Cancer Care Lived Experience Focus Groups.
The Scottish Government and Macmillan Cancer Support are working together to transform cancer care in Scotland.
Transforming Cancer Care is a programme of work to enable health, social care and third sector partners to improve the cancer pathway for people from the point of their cancer diagnosis. It builds on existing Macmillan services to ensure all people in Scotland with a new cancer diagnosis, have access to services that support and meet their needs.
Health and Social Care Alliance Scotland (the ALLIANCE) has partnered with Macmillan Cancer Support to make sure people affected by cancer are at the centre of this work by holding focus groups with people who have a lived experience of cancer. The focus groups are a chance to dive deeper into the experience of accessing cancer services among the general population who are affected by cancer.
We are looking for people affected by cancer to become focus group peer evaluators. As a peer evaluator, you will help us create focus group questions based on your experience as a person affected by cancer. You will also co-facilitate the focus group discussion and you will have the opportunity to assist in the analysis of the focus groups findings.
What we expect of you
We recognise that it is impossible for one person to represent the views of everyone affected by cancer in Scotland. Your role is to provide your own perspective as someone with experience of cancer and of accessing cancer services by co-producing the questions to ask in focus groups.
We expect you to:
- Attend training provided by the ALLIANCE to prepare you for the role. The training will cover facilitation methods, cancer conversations and trauma awareness
- Meet with the Macmillan Lived Experience Development Officer before focus groups to co-create and co-produce the focus group questions.
- With the assistance of ALLIANCE staff, facilitate focus group(s)
- Attend a de-briefing session to provide your views on the analysis that the Macmillan Team have conducted on the focus group discussions
The length of time that you wish to be a peer evaluator for is completely up to you and will be negotiated between yourself and the ALLIANCE.
Who are we looking for?
We are looking for people who are living with, or have been affected by cancer through someone they know, love or have cared for. We would prefer if your experience is within the last five years to reflect current cancer care services. It would also help if you:
- Have an interest in working with others to improve cancer care services
- Are keen to develop your skills and experience
- Have good communication and listening skills (in any language)
How to apply
If you are interested, or just want to find out more, we would be delighted to hear from you by email or phone. Contact Sarah Dick, Macmillan Lived Experience Development Officer at the ALLIANCE, by email to macmillan@alliance-scotland.org.uk. Or call 0141 404 0231 to leave your contact details and Sarah will call you back.
