Scottish Sensory Centre course led by Nancy Conley Pinkerton, Qualified Habilitation Specialist.

Travelling in a wheelchair can be particularly disorientating and confusing for children and young people with Visual Impairments (CYPVI), especially when an adult is manoeuvring the wheelchair.

This face-to-face course facilitated by the Scottish Sensory Centre in Edinburgh is designed to equip teachers and classroom assistants with practical strategies, insights, and tips to enhance the mobility experience for the CYPVIs they support. It can also serve as a refresher for Habilitation Specialists and QTVIs.

The course will focus on supporting environmental awareness, orientation, directionality, sensory skills, and fundamental concepts that are essential for CYPVIs to be aware, informed, and actively involved when an adult is manoeuvring their wheelchair.

The training session will include hands-on activities in both indoor and outdoor environments, ensuring a comprehensive learning experience. The skills acquired during this course will enable participants to effectively support CYPVIs in their daily lives and contribute to their overall development of Habilitation skills.

This course costs £100 and takes place on Tuesday 25th August 2026, 10am – 4pm in Edinburgh.
