ALLIANCE response – consultation on Supporting Disabled Children, Young People and their Families

The new resource aims to help families of children and young people with disabilities to access and utilise their rights.
The Scottish Government has called for views on the content and format of a public resource that will look to provide information, based on the lived experiences of disabled children, young people, and their families across three pillars:
- rights and information,
- accessibility of support
- transitions.
The Getting to Know Getting it Right for Every Child team held a consultation event on 12 June for members to add their views to help shape the ALLIANCE’s response.
Presentations offering an introduction to the resource were delivered by Scottish Government colleagues, followed by smaller table top discussions on different aspects of the resource. These were then fed back to the group to gain a wider perspective.
A number of key points were made in the discussions, including highlighting the importance of inclusive communication (for example, a version that is accessible and meaningful to children and young people), ensuring children, young people and families families are aware of the resource, and to include more case studies from family perspectives.
The notes taken from this event were collated and added in to the final response which was then submitted to Scottish Government, and can be viewed below. We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who attended our event and shared their invaluable experience to help shape the future resource.
The consultation will close on 5th September. To view the draft resource, and to submit your own response to the call for views, please visit the Scottish Government Consultation Hub (this link will take you away from our website.)
