Free research concert from Manchester Camerata for people with Deafness

Take part in classical music listening research at this unique event.
The Cadenza Project is a 5-year UKRI-funded research project involving the Universities of Salford, Leeds, Sheffield and Nottingham with associated partners RNID, Logitech, University of Oldenburg, Sonova and BBC.
The project is researching how hearing loss affects music listening and working to improve it. We are organising a free concert working with Manchester Camerata.
As well as hearing the orchestra performing classical romantic repertoire, there will be a research element in which the orchestra will perform musical excerpts in different ways to see how they affect listening experiences. This is a unique opportunity to shape future research on hearing aids while enjoying hearing the fabulous Camerata.
The concert will feature Beethoven’s Symphony No. 6 (‘Pastoral’), with an introduction from Gábor Takács-Nagy about Beethoven, the Symphony and how Beethoven’s hearing was at the time of writing. There will also be a Q&A session at the end of the performance with experts on music, hearing loss, and hearing aids.
The research concert is designed for anyone who enjoys listening to classical music. No specialist listening or analytical skills are needed. We need an audience that has a mixture of people with and without hearing loss. If you would normally listen to music with hearing aids or a cochlear implant, please use them.
When is the concert?
The concert takes place on 29th October 2026, 3 – 4.15pm at Stoller Hall, Manchester, M3 1DA.
