Humans of Scotland review 2022
- Area of Work: The ALLIANCE

Humans of Scotland share stories to raise awareness, educate, challenge stigma, and spark conversations.
During 2022, Humans of Scotland has shared 33 stories, showcasing a diverse range of individual’s experiences, from rare hereditary conditions, such as an individual living with Cowden’s Syndrome, to a mother’s story of caring for her son with Lyme’s disease, to experiences of Pelvic Girdle Pain, Bipolar Disorder, and Learning Disabilities.
As well as individuals, Humans of Scotland has worked with organisations to share a variety of experiences as a longer-form series of storytelling. We worked with the Care-at-Home NHS team in Dumfries and Galloway to share a glimpse into the day to day of their care-at-home staff, as well as showing the perspective of a parent whose daughter is supported via care-at-home services.
Humans of Scotland has worked with the NHS to spotlight Allied Health Professionals for their awareness day this October, with Autism Understanding to share experiences of later diagnosis of Autism and to celebrate National Youth Day, and with Endometriosis UK to share experiences of their “Endo Warriors”.
The platform provided by Humans of Scotland has been use to raise awareness of the lived experience of individuals along with highlighting awareness days. This year featured the first Pride month series, which followed Blair’s story of his experience with conversion therapy across the month. This series aimed to challenge the stereotypes and misconceptions surrounding LGBTQIA+ experiences.
We aim to the human aspect of important work being done across the ALLIANCE. Working with our Scotland Reducing Gambling Harms programme continued, as we shared Ross’s story on how gambling took over his life, and his recovery from gambling harms. In 2023 more stories are planned, to help break down the stigma attached to gambling addiction through raising awareness and sparking conversations.
“Thank you for sharing your story and raising awareness of gambling-related harm and the support available.” (Facebook User).
Humans of Scotland sponsored the Self Management Champion Award during Self Management month and awards held by the ALLIANCE throughout September. We shared the stories of three of the nominees for this category, including the winner of the award, Darren. These stories celebrated the journeys of all nominees to becoming Self Management champions, and highlighted their resilience, bravery, and remarkable spirit in the face of their varied experiences. One of the nominees of this category was featured in Glasgow Live (this link will take you away from our website), sharing their story of their recovery from breast cancer with a wider audience, championing their experience, and highlighting the work of the ALLIANCE.
If you have a story to tell, share you story with us.
