Manifesto sets out the priorities for the future of community Optometry in Scotland

Optometry Scotland’s 2026 manifesto builds on extensive engagement across the sector.

It outlines three key areas where political commitment is needed to protect and strengthen Scotland’s model of accessible, high-quality community eye care:

  1. Protect Sight. Prevent Blindness. Deliver Universal Access
Safeguard and evolve Scotland’s world-leading model of funded NHS eye care through General Ophthalmic Services.
  1. Shift the Balance of Care: Invest in Local, Enhanced Services
Commit to expanding community-delivered services that reduce waiting times and hospital pressure.
  1. Secure the Future Workforce and Infrastructure
Plan and fund for a sustainable, skilled, and well-equipped workforce.

This manifesto has been endorsed by all four UK optical bodies reflecting a shared commitment to strengthening community eye care across Scotland.

It guides Optometry Scotland’s political engagement in the year ahead and reinforces the importance of the community optical profession in delivering accessible, preventative, and patient-centred care.
