Report calls on the UK Government to ensure Access to Work is fully accessible

RNID and DeafATW  have released new research on the accessibility of Access to Work for people who are Deaf or Deafblind.

The research shows that changes to the Access to Work scheme are making it harder for Deaf BSL users to receive the communication support they need in the workplace.

The main findings included:

  • Over one third (37%) of BSL users had their award changed at renewal despite their needs remaining the same, leaving people without communication support such as BSL interpreters.
  • Cuts to awards have direct consequences: 37% said they now attend fewer work meetings or events, and 41% reported missing training or development opportunities as a result.

The UK Government is looking at reforming Access to Work and wants to know how the scheme can better support disabled people into work.

RNID and DeafATW are urging people to contact their local MP to ensure Deaf people’s needs are firmly on the agenda.

An online action page where people can send a message to their MP directly is available here.
