The Health and Social Care Alliance Scotland (the ALLIANCE) is deeply saddened by the death of Christina McKelvie MSP.

McKelvie’s long service at the Scottish Parliament included time as Convener of the Equalities and Human Rights Committee, and subsequently in government as Minister for Equalities and Older People and most recently Minister for Drugs and Alcohol Policy. Through these positions, McKelvie helped drive action on key ALLIANCE priorities including human rights and through our work with the National Collaborative co-designing a Charter of Rights for People Affected by Substance Use.

ALLIANCE Chief Officer of Development, Sara Redmond, said: “Christina McKelvie made an enormous contribution to Scottish politics over many years, and was a formidable advocate for a fairer society. Her passing, at far too young an age, will be keenly felt by many. On behalf of the whole ALLIANCE, I offer my sincerest condolences to her family, her friends, and her colleagues across Holyrood.”

Dr Irene Oldfather, Director of Strategic Partnerships, External Affairs and Outreach, at the ALLIANCE, said she was deeply saddened by the news.

“I had the pleasure of working with Christina both in the Scottish Parliament and as a partner from the Third Sector where she was always interested to know and understand the impact of policy. More recently in her Ministerial Portfolio we worked together on the Charter of Rights for those who experience substance use to which she was very committed. As well as well as her professional ability she always made the time to chat and catch up. It is so sad to hear this news. Sincere condolences to her family.”
