The National Autistic Society has launched a campaign calling for improvement to support, inclusion, and services.
The National Autistic Society (NAS) Scotland has launched its new ‘Act Now for Autistic Rights’ campaign ahead of the Scottish Parliament election in May. The campaign highlights the experiences of autistic people and their families, and raises awareness of the changes NAS Scotland believes could help improve support, inclusion and access to services.
A key focus of the campaign is the proposed Learning Disabilities, Autism and Neurodivergence (LDAN) Bill, which NAS Scotland states could play an important role in strengthening national and local planning, improving access to diagnosis and support, and increasing accountability across services.
The campaign is centred around four themes:
- Diagnosis and support
- Accessible healthcare
- Support in schools
- Inclusive communities
NAS Scotland notes that across these areas, the LDAN Bill could help address long waiting lists, improve early identification of needs through mandatory training in education and healthcare, and reduce the gap between the support autistic people should receive and what is currently available.
Branches, volunteers, autistic people and families across Scotland will be contributing to the campaign, with opportunities to take part in local activities, online engagement and awareness‑raising.
Anyone interested in learning more can read the campaign manifesto, watch the campaign videos, or sign up for updates on the Act Now for Autistic Rights webpage.
