Joining hundreds of organisations to defend the European Convention on Human Rights, because no one has human rights, unless we all do
The Health and Social Care Alliance Scotland (the ALLIANCE) has joined nearly 300 organisations in signing a joint statement, led by Liberty, defending the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR).
The statement warns against growing political and media attacks on the ECHR, describing them as “inaccurate and scaremongering” and highlighting their “devastating real-world consequences” for marginalised communities. It stresses that the ECHR is fundamental to democracy, accountability and dignity, protecting people from victims of sexual violence and mental health patients to those affected by serious injustices such as Hillsborough and Windrush.
Human rights are not the cause of the challenges facing our society, but part of the solution. Too many people still struggle to realise their rights to housing, education, health, employment and social security. A human rights based approach can help ensure resources are used to improve people’s lives.
Through signing this statement, the ALLIANCE has reaffirmed its’ strong support for the existing human rights framework in the UK, while recognising the need for the government to strengthen it further, including through direct incorporation of additional international human rights treaties into domestic law.
Now, with publication of the statement, we stand alongside other partners in affirming that “no one has human rights, unless we all have human rights”.
