The ALLIANCE is delighted to publish the learning from the Power Ayrshire and Arran Legacy Project.
The Project aimed to support people to use digital to stay well and to deliver three specific place-based interventions.
The three locations for this project were selected through a process of balancing need and opportunity. These were Kilwinning Library in North Ayrshire, Girvan Library in South Ayrshire and a mobile bus initiative in East Ayrshire.
What went well
North, South and East Ayrshire each developed their own initiatives and activities, shaped by a combination of local needs and opportunities.
A hyper-local approach may come with more demands, such as time and resourcing, but the service delivered is more likely to be suited to the needs of the local community.
Challenges
Cultural shifts can take a long time to truly become embedded within communities.
The project timeline was ambitious, limited to six months, and with the COVID-19 pandemic and winter holiday period, this affected what could be delivered.
Recommendations
Linking higher level expectations to on-the-ground realities was a key learning point.
Take time to communicate with staff who are expected to deliver additional services. Involving them from the beginning in service design, will ensure ownership and a shared understanding over the project aims.
We also recommend carrying out an Equality and Human Rights Impact Assessment (EQHRIA) (this link will take you away from our website) to avoid widening inequalities.
The learning from this EQHRIA process, together with the template developed for this project, can be accessed here.
What next
We hope that the recommendations can lead to a sustainability path that NHS Ayrshire and Arran can follow to enable more preventative, community-based approaches to health and wellbeing provision.
We also hope that other organisations can transfer the learning from this report into similar initiatives.
