Multisensory Narrative Research Project

Call for participants with Deafness to take part in a project about incomplete sensory information.

An MSc researcher at the university of Edinburgh is recruiting participants to take part in a creative research project.

What is the project about?
This project explores how people with different hearing experiences may interpret partial and incomplete sensory information. Participants will experience either an auditory fragment, an abstract visual fragment or a short textual fragment, without seeing or hearing the content received by the other participants.

After the experience, each participant will select one abstract image that best reflects their response and write one short sentence describing what might be happening in that moment.

The system will then blend the three images into one shared visual composition and connect the three descriptions into a short story. The final image and text will be presented together as a multimodal narrative work.

Who can take part?
Adults with any hearing background are welcome, including people with typical hearing, partial hearing loss, different hearing levels in each ear, and Deaf or Hard of Hearing participants. No previous experience in music, art, design or storytelling is required.

What will participation involve?
Participation will involve completing a short installation experience, selecting one abstract image, writing one short sentence, and completing a brief written questionnaire about the experience. The whole session is expected to take approximately 20–30 minutes.

Location and time
The session will take place at the Edinburgh Futures Institute (EFI). The date and time will be arranged with each participant in advance.

Accessibility
The activity will use written instructions wherever possible, and participants will not be required to answer questions verbally. Please let me know in advance if you have any accessibility requirements or communication preferences. Reasonable adjustments will be made where possible.
