Lumo TV have asked Heriot-Watt's BSL Team to find out what kinds of signing Deaf sign language users in the UK prefer
Lumo TV have commissioned independent, impartial research from Heriot-Watt University’s BSL team to better understand what deaf audiences in the UK really want when it comes to sign language on television.
The key question is whether you prefer sign-presented programmes where deaf presenters and actors are at the heart of the content, or sign-interpreted programmes where an in-vision interpreter is added to existing programmes.
This research is happening at a crucial time as broadcasters are thinking about how to deliver more accessible content. Your views will help ensure that any decisions are informed by the needs and preferences of the Deaf community. The findings will be used to shape future conversations about access, representation, and how sign language is integrated/included in UK film and television.
You can take part in the survey if:
- You are a Deaf, Deafblind or hard-of-hearing sign language user living in the UK
- You are over 16 years of age.
Hearing sign language users are also welcome to take part.
It takes about 3 minutes to complete and is open until 1 September 2025.
