2024 was another successful year for the Self Management Programme.

2024 saw the introduction of a new online platform for the Self Management Fund, along with a two-stage assessment process, designed to reduce the burden on applicants. With a steep increase in applications, the new system ensured flexibility and smooth running of the process. Self Management for Life saw £1.8 million awarded to 32 projects focussing on prevention, supporting people on waiting lists, and overcoming barriers that create health inequalities, bringing the total to over £28 million awarded to 464 projects throughout the entire lifetime of the fund.

This year, we secured CPD accreditation for Self Management Reflective Practice training for healthcare professionals. As part of this process, we refreshed our training documents. Throughout the year we delivered 12 sessions across the country.

The Self Management Network Scotland
continues to thrive, recently reaching the milestone of 1,000 members. The team have visited members across the country, including in Highland, Grampian, the Outer Hebrides and closer to home in the central belt. Quarterly networking sessions, hosted by the self management team with presentations from network members and ALLIANCE teams, are well attended, with presentations recorded and shared online.

Another successful self management awareness raising campaign ran on social media, starting in July and culminating in Self Management Week (23-26 September), with 11 events hosted by the ALLIANCE, Self Management Network members and previous Self Management Award winners. The Self Management Awards took place in Scottish Parliament, with speeches from Gillian Mackay MSP, Neil Gray MSP, 2023 Self Management Champion Michelle Howieson, and the launch of ‘H is for Human’, the new Humans of Scotland book, written with Terrence Higgins Trust and marking 40 years of HIV in Scotland. The quality and diversity of all shortlisted nominees underscored the importance of self management.

This year saw the Self Management Team expand our international reach, attending the International Conference on Integrated Care in Belfast to deliver a workshop on learning from our Self Management Reflective Practice sessions about the role of leaders in supporting self management, as well as the North American Conference on Integrated Care in Calgary to speak about the role the ALLIANCE Self Management Programme plays in enabling social prescribing and practitioners ability to support self management. As part of Self Management Week, we chaired a webinar kicking of the Integrated Care Matters: Webinar Series 7, with speakers from Canada, Wales and Scotland. The webinar reached 164 registrants from 22 countries.

Throughout the year, extensive work has gone into improving the evaluation processes for the Self Management Programme. The programme was an early adopter for work with Matter of Focus to create an OutNav pathway for our work, working closely with the Impact and Evaluation Manager to write outcomes and consider data sources that capture the work, with a particular focus on qualitative information. The team also worked with BiGGAR Economics to produce a report on the programme, with a particular focus on the Self Management Fund, and a design for evaluation, this time focussing on quantitative data.
