North Ayrshire Recovery College has released a powerful film on mental health, reflecting on the pandemic and looking to the future.
During the COVID-19 pandemic mental health has been at the forefront of concerns for many people. Having emerged from the last year, North Ayrshire Recovery College staff, volunteers and students worked to produce an impactful film reflecting on what we have lived through and how it affected people’s mental health, also casting an eye to the future.
The poignant piece was shot on Stevenston beach in North Ayrshire and includes stunning drone shots of the area as words written in the sand send messages of understanding and then hope. The piece is bookended by poetry from Kit Frank Duddy.
Released in time for Mental Health Awareness Week 2021, coinciding with the Scottish Mental Health Arts Festival and played at the Recovery College’s week-long event ‘CHIME to recover, back to normality’, the film has garnered praise from a variety of areas.
Richard Warden, film producer and film festival curator said “The world premiere of Turning the Tide that capped our ‘Hope Through Film’ programme was incredibly powerful. I’ve hosted over 100 mental health-related film events, but I can’t think of a single one that involved a more moving and inspirational moment. Huge congratulations to co-directors John Caldwell and Julie Wilkes, along with everyone else involved through the North Ayrshire Wellbeing and Recovery College, for creating this stunning and extremely timely reminder that better times will emerge.”
Staff and volunteers state the highlight of the production was coming together on the beach for the filming, for them an incredibly meaningful point of the pandemic.
You can watch the film on North Ayrshire Wellbeing and Recovery College’s YouTube channel (this link will take you away from our website).
North Ayrshire Recovery College is open to anyone who lives, works or studies in North Ayrshire, and offers free educational courses to support mental and emotional wellbeing.
