The ALLIANCE joins 54 signatories in calling for accessible news and equal access to information for all.
The Health and Social Care Alliance Scotland (the ALLIANCE) has joined a growing UK-wide call for more accessible news, signing a joint open letter coordinated by Disability Equality Scotland.
The letter, addressed to Lisa Nandy MP, UK Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, urges the UK Government and broadcasters to ensure that television and radio news is produced in accessible, easy-to-understand formats. it highlights that accessible news is already available in several other conutries and argues that similiar provision should be introduced in the UK.
Produced in Easy Read format to ensure accessibility, the letter calls for the BBC to provide accessible news as part of its core public services role. it also argues that the requirement for accessible news should be embedded within the BBC Charter, streghtening expectation around inclusive broadcasting.
The ALLIANCE, and other signatories, empahsise that accessible news is not an optional extra, but an improtant step toward ensuring equal access to information for all.
