Apply now to become a Peer Evaluator for the Transforming Cancer Care Lived Experience Minority Ethnic Focus Groups
The Health and Social Care Alliance Scotland (the ALLIANCE) has partnered with Macmillan Cancer Support, to ensure cancer services meet individual needs from diagnosis onwards. To make sure people affected by cancer are at the centre of this work, we are holding focus groups with people who have a lived experience of cancer. Our focus groups will explore what people like about cancer services and what could be different.
We are particularly interested in the experience of people affected by cancer from minority ethnic communities.
We are looking for individuals from minority ethnic or racial communities to become peer evaluators. As a peer evaluator, you will have a direct role in gathering the information that will inform the transformation of cancer care services in Scotland.
As a peer evaluator you will:
- help us create focus group questions based on your own experience of accessing cancer services
- co-facilitate the focus group discussion
- give your insight into focus groups analysis.
What we expect of you
We recognise that it is impossible for one person to represent the views of everyone affected by cancer in Scotland. Your role is to provide your own perspective as someone with experience of cancer and of accessing cancer services by co-producing the questions to ask in focus groups.
We expect you to:
- Attend training provided by the ALLIANCE to prepare you for the role. The training will cover facilitation methods, cancer conversations and trauma awareness
- Meet with the Macmillan Lived Experience Development Officer before focus groups to co-create and co-produce the focus group questions.
- With the assistance of ALLIANCE staff, facilitate focus group(s)
- Attend a de-briefing session to provide your views on the analysis that the Macmillan Team have conducted on the focus group discussions
The length of time that you wish to be a peer evaluator for is completely up to you and will be negotiated between yourself and the ALLIANCE.
Who are we looking for?
We are looking for people who are living with, or have been affected by cancer through someone they know, love or have cared for. We would prefer if your experience is within the last ten years to reflect current cancer care services. It would also help if you:
- Have an interest in working with others to improve cancer care services
- Are keen to develop your skills and experience
- Have good communication and listening skills (in any language)
How to apply
If you are interested, or just want to find out more, we would be delighted to hear from you by email or phone. Contact Sarah Dick, Macmillan Lived Experience Development Officer at the ALLIANCE, by email to macmillan@alliance-scotland.org.uk. Or call 0141 404 0231 to leave your contact details and Sarah will call you back.
