The ALLIANCE has responded to the Economy and Fair Work Committee consultation on the disabled employment gap.
The ALLIANCE has called for the Scottish Government to use a human rights based approach when taking on recommendations for minimising the disabled employment gap.
The Economy and Fair Work Committee has held an inquiry that will look to identify and address barriers to accessing employment for disabled people in Scotland. The Committee sought views on four key issues, including remaining challenges, policy recommendations and the impact of Covid-19.
The ALLIANCE has submitted a response, commenting on the challenges facing many disabled people in accessing Scotland’s labour market, including the cost of living crisis and gaps in support for children and young people transitioning out of full time education. The ALLIANCE has also commented on the challenges brought on by COVID-19, including the impact of Long Covid and burnout of workers in health and social care.
We recommend applying a human rights based approach to any recommendations made, by utilising coproduction to understand better the issues faced by those with lived experience. The ALLIANCE also supports calls from the volunteering sector to improve access to volunteering in order to aid participation rates in both volunteering and employment.
