In the 2021/22 Programme for Government, Scottish Ministers committed to introducing a new National Transitions to Adulthood Strategy during this Parliamentary term to support disabled young people as they make the transition to adult life:
“We will begin work on a new National Transitions to Adulthood Strategy to support disabled young people as they make the transition to adult life, and provide them and those who look after them with joined‑up guidance and support to unlock better educational and employment opportunities and health outcomes”.
This commitment has recently been reaffirmed by the First Minister in his Policy Prospectus ‘Equality, Opportunity, Community: New Leadership – A Fresh Start’, published 18 April 2023.
To support the development of the Strategy, a new External Strategic Working Group has been established, comprising representatives of parent carers, education, health, social care, local authorities and the third sector. Three groups of disabled young people are also contributing to this work. The overall purpose of the Strategic Working Group is to bring together organisations who can support the development, and the implementation, of Scotland’s first National Transitions to Adulthood Strategy for disabled young people.
As a member of the Strategic Working Group, the ALLIANCE is encouraging members to share views and learning around transitions to adulthood, to help inform and shape the strategy. If you wish to discuss anything mentioned in more detail, or be kept informed on the development of the Strategy and any engagement activity please email our Children and Young People Team at GIRFEC@alliance-scotland.org.uk
