Our Self Management team review activities over 2018 for our annual report.
2018 marks ten years of Scotland’s self management strategy ‘Gaun Yersel’, and the continued relevancy of the strategy, which was co-produced by people living with long term conditions, and has informed our work over the year as we advanced in strengthening self management across health and social care.
This year the Self Management Network Scotland grew to over 650 members across all of Scotland’s 32 local authorities and co-produced an action plan outlining priorities and activities for the network going forward. The Self Management team have continued to support regional self management networks across Scotland including Grampian, Ayrshire and Arran and have been supporting the development of a new regional forum in the Highlands.
In 2018, we completed our year long project, in partnership with NHS Health Scotland and Scottish Libraries and Information Council, to develop a training resource for public library staff to support self management and health literacy. The Self Management team have also been successful in a bid for an additional two year project exploring how to build the role of public library staff into the wider multidisciplinary health professional team with self management underpinning this.
To coincide with the ten year anniversary, Self Management Week’s theme was ‘Gaun Yersel!’. The week brought together people living with long term conditions, health and social care professionals, third sector staff and more for an engaging week of interesting and thought provoking events exploring self management. Over 1,800 people voted for the Self Management Awards Project of the Year which led to a to the Awards Ceremony at the Scottish Parliament where six new winners were announced.
The Self Management team launched and continue to deliver the Self Management Reflective Practice session to health and social care staff across Scotland. The session which is aimed at frontline health and social care staff and designed with the voice of lived experience at the heart of it, creates the space for staff to explore how they support people to self manage and identify actions going forward and the support needed to enable these.
The ALLIANCE, led by the Self Management programme, in partnership with the International Foundation for Integrative Care (IFIC) have launched a Self Management and Co-production Special Interest Group (SIG). The SIG aims to facilitate collaboration across sectors and between countries to enhance our understanding, adoption and evaluation of self management based approaches
