We were joined by Autumn and Chris to discuss what needs to be done to bridge the digital divide for care experienced young people.

COVID-19 has increased the need for care experienced young people to have access to devices and the Internet: it is a human rights issue, as well as a wellbeing one, which was preexistent to COVID-19 but has been enhanced by it.

Chris and Autumn discussed what the current situation is: care experienced young people are “left behind”, and there is a real gap between policy, announcements and practice.

Bridging the digital gap will require less bureaucracy, the State really stepping in as a corporate parent, challenging the “postcode lottery”, an approach based on trusting care experienced young people around digital issues and challenging social attitudes which often label them as “vulnerable” (which reduces their opportunities and impacts their human rights).
