Contributors on the latest episode of Equally Valued explore where the country finds itself in the creation of the National Care Service.
Episode 3 of the Equally Valued podcast is now available on all major podcast streaming platforms. ‘Scotland’s National Care Service – where are we now?’ explores how the legislative process of the National Care Service has progressed from the recommendations set out in the Feeley Report. The episode takes stock of where things currently lie with the largest social care reform in a generation.
Audiences can hear an interview with one of the advisors to the Independent Review of Social Care, Dr Jim Elder-Woodward. Jim receives social care support himself and is also a former commissioner, manager and researcher as well as a campaigner for rights of disabled people for over 45 years. Jim shares his views on how the legislative process has unfolded so far and where it falls short in delivering the necessary outcomes for people receiving care.
“There’s a lot not in the Bill, and my fear is that if it’s left to Ministers, and left for secondary legislation,” said Jim during the podcast. “There’s a danger that further down the line Ministers and other people make changes in secondary legislation and we will lose a lot of what was in the Feeley report.”
The second half of the episode features further in-depth discussion between the episodes hosts – ALLIANCE Chief Officer, Sara Redmond, Senior Policy Officer, Hannah Tweed and healthandcare.scot Publisher, John Macgill. The group looks at the key areas where action can still be taken by Scottish Government to provide individuals with transformative change to how services are delivered.
